When I was anticipating my trip to Kaua’i for the Mermaid Retreat, I imagined myself doing some extra time in the hoop and even doing some running again, to get into bikini shape fast. Instead, I ended up seeing an allergy doctor and being treated for food allergies. While this is a great thing for my overall health, it put my body into a detox that left me tired and not feeling at all like working out. It was even a struggle to hoop, most days.

I left for my trip feeling self-conscious about wearing the summer clothes I’d packed for the trip and afraid I would be uncomfortable at the beach. I don’t own a one-piece bathing suit. I tried them a few times and just hate the way they feel on my body.

Anyway, what I discovered while there is that the hooping I have been doing all along had continued to pay off. I’d been so caught up in my old (ancient!) bad habit of focusing on what I didn’t like about the way my body looks that I hadn’t really seen myself. I’ve still got abs! And though I wasn’t in the best shape of my life, I was in Hawai’i. I talked to my friends about how I was feeling and someone said, “This is the way women’s bodies are made. We’re all different and yet the same in so many ways.” Everyone was wearing bikinis. And everyone’s body was unique. I finally let go and got into the joy of being at the beach with my mermaid friends.

Hooping is a great antidote to all the calorie-laden goodies and party food temptations that are bound to be around for the next six weeks. Just thirty minutes a day of hooping can burn up to 2100 calories a week. That’s a lot of candy canes and eggnog, ladies!

If you live elsewhere, I encourage you to grab your hoop, put on a playlist of music that makes you want to move and let yourself go in a good hoop flow. Every day. Even if it is just for a few minutes. Thanksgiving is less than a week away. There’s no better time to start than now.
