It was from these lovely ladies, Christabel Zamor, aka Hoop Girl and Julie Greicius aka Aviatrix, that I learned almost everything I know about hooping and hoop dance. Christabel is a phenomenon among hoopers and a remarkable woman who, through her work, inspires women to embrace their Goddess nature. Ironically, I had no idea that this was the case when I first met her. Julie, a Goddess in her own right, was Christabel’s assistant at the Hoop Girl Teacher Training I took last September. On the first day of the training she greeted me graciously at the door and did more to make me comfortable than I could have asked for. I was way out of my element at the training. I was older than the other students by much more than a decade. And though my passion for hoop dance was already burning bright, I was also new to hooping and desperately hoping that I’d be able to learn what I needed to so I could one day become a competent teacher.
I gave the teacher training everything I had and got my certificate. Then came the hard work of applying myself to not only learn to do all the moves but learn to do them well enough so I could teach them to others. I immediately enrolled in the Hoop Girl Level One class that Julie was teaching in San Francisco and took the twelve-week course. I was amazed at how much I learned. Julie is a patient and persistent teacher. She has an eye like a hawk and can pick out where your move is going south from across the room. More than anything, she is compassionate and sensitive to the tender feelings of new hoopers and has a wonderful way with words. So even if you suck at the move she will find a way to make you feel good about it and help you to find your way to success.
I went to San Francisco for another class with Julie, tonight. Though I have been teaching my own beginner classes, there is always more to learn. It was such fun to go back to the same studio in the City and be the student, once again. It was a great class, as usual, and I found myself appreciating Julie and her assistant, Cassandra, even more than I did the first time around.
Tonight I am especially appreciative of my teachers, the gorgeous Goddesses, Julie and Christabel. In so many ways, their instruction and inspiration made it possible for me to go from where I was to where I am today. I am overflowing with love and gratitude for all they have offered.
