On the last morning of the In-Depth Hoop Dance Retreat with One Hoop One Love‘s Shakti Sunfire, we gathered on the point across from the Kalani for Shakti’s guided meditation. We were brimming with the goodness that comes from sharing a week filled with hoop dance, the love and laughter of sweet sisterhood, delicious meals and sleeping under the same roof. As the sun rose, I was filled with gratitude for all of it and the spark it had ignited within me. This gorgeous picture by Cadence of Cadencia Photography takes me right back to that moment in time.
I came to recognize, on a deeper level, that hoop dance is about so much more than activating a skill set for playing with a plastic circle. For myself and so many of the people I have met since my hoop journey was initiated, five years ago, the hoop is a portal for profound, ongoing transformation. I came to hoop dance, quite unexpectedly, by way of my interest in sacred geometry. Someone posted a video of herself hoop dancing and I was mesmerized and captivated by what I saw. It would be many months before I convinced myself that I, too, could actually do anything like what she was doing with a hoop. At that time I had no clue that hoop dance flow creates a dynamic, living, breathing experience of sacred geometry. All I knew was that my heart got all crazy every time I watched the video.
This retreat brought me many full-circle moments of realization and appreciation for the journey thus far. It allowed me to make new connections, not just in the myriad ways to move with the hoop, but with women whose hearts respond to the same call as mine. The dots on the map of my history, both before and after encountering the hoop, began to appear in identifiable patterns that finally made sense to me. Today I see the spiral of time more clearly than ever, winding through the past and turning into my future. And it’s shining, full of promise, just like this perfect Hawaiian sunrise.
