I spent last week, from Sunday to Sunday, at the One Hoop One Love, In-Depth Hoop Dance Retreat on the Big Island of Hawaii. And it was amazing! On so many levels. Our hosts, sisters Shakti Sunfire and Luna Brie Blakeman rolled out the welcoming Aloha from the opening circle and each day, one class after another built on what we had learned until by the end we were all brimming with hoop goodness.
I learned so much, not only about hoop dance but about myself. I met a beautiful community of extraordinary women and came away with a whole new raft of reasons why hoop dance makes my world go round. Though I lived on Oahu several years ago, I’d never been to the island of Hawaii. Almost from the moment I got off the plane in Hilo, the energy on the island was palpable. I felt the elements as never before. While we were there, the surf hit record breaking heights, with reports of 40 to 50 foot waves in some spots. The richness of the fragrant air embraced me like a warm hug. I didn’t see the volcano, but I could feel Pele rumbling under the surface, all the same.
I came home blissfully recharged in spirit though physically tired and sore from days of hoop classes. So I’ve been taking it easy for a few days and given myself time to really take in and integrate the beauty that was the In-Depth Hoop Retreat. I underwent a remarkable initiation and introduction to a new level of myself. In some ways, hoop dance feels new to me, again, too. I am so excited share some of what I learned in class on Saturday mornings. Aloha!
