Clips from my hoop dance practice on January 31, 2011. It was one of the first beautiful days since we’d moved into our new home with that huge backyard just before Christmas. I was so excited to be able to finally hoop outside I couldn’t resist turning on the camera.
We’d seen Boz Skaggs in concert the Friday night before so I’d immersed myself in his music again and was enjoying hooping to it.
I’ve taken several classes since I shot this video and have learned so much that even my practice sessions are considerably different now, just two months later. That’s one of the values of videoing yourself practicing. You learn so much about what you need to work on to improve your form and style. It’s really fun to look back and see progress. I have now been hooping for 19 months. It is so much easier in so many ways but I continue to take classes, watch videos and practice the new moves, so in some ways ‘beginner’s mind’ is always readily available. And I love it all. Even the things that I can’t imagine I have a prayer of ever learning. I’ve already far exceeded my expectations of what I thought I could possibly do with a hoop. Who am I to say what is impossible now?
Hoop dance has given me so much more than I could ever have dreamed. The list goes on and on. And it just keeps on giving.
Have you hugged your hoop today? I’m hugging mine.
